A little Bookish Banter to get us through. Bookish Banter is a little bit of banter about our bookish thoughts as we have a friendly discussion over a nice cup of tea.
You have now finished your book, what do you do? Do you keep it? Do you give it away? How do you decide?
Ash:
Mine really just depends on how much I like the book, or if it's in a series. If I think I will read the book again, or if I want my husband/mom to read it then yes, I will keep it. If it's the first in a series and I like it, I'll keep it. If it's the first in a series and I don't like it? I will probably get rid of it. Just like if it's the second in a series and I don't like it, but I liked the first one, then I'd keep it because I liked the series as a whole and want to finish it. Then if I finish the series and it was just kinda eh, I'll get rid of the whole series.
Wow, did any of that make sense? I feel like that was one big run on thought.
Let's try again.
Did I like the book? I'll keep it.
Was it eh? I'll get rid of it.
Was it the first in a series and I liked it? Keep
Didn't like it? I'll get rid of.
That basically makes sense.. right?
Jenn:
Yes, Ash, that makes sense (of course I live with you and know your brain) and I am ALMOST the same.
There are so many things that go into it for me.
I will start by... did I like this book enough to re-read? Is it a stand-alone or series? If its a series, did I finish the series? If it is a series, even if I won't re-read it will I enjoy it being on my shelf because I loved it so much?
I do not re-read many books. I just don't because there are so many great books out there. There are a few, however, that I will one day reread. Those I keep. If I think I will ever re-read them. Now if I don't think I will reread them one day but there are still more in the series to come out, I just love the series so much I like to see the book on my shelf... every now and then take them off and pet them and remember how much I loved them... I will keep the book. If its a signed copy or just one of those books that just remains forever with me. I will keep the book. If I think this book would be great to have in case of an apocalypse of any kind and I can never buy a new book again. I will keep the book.
What I will not keep... Books I just didn't enjoy, many stand-alone books, many hardcover books. I just don't have the room to store them. Any books of a series where the covers changed mid-series. I can't stand my books not matching. I will see if anyone else in the house wants to read the book before I remove it from my shelves. Once I decided to remove the book, I will either take a trip to the library, used bookstore, or my friends house. Every now and then I will do giveaways on the blog but I hate doing these. The only reason is its a lot of pressure to remember to mail the book out. I like doing giveaways where I order them the book and send it to them that way. Easier for me.
An audiobook is a bit different for me. I only keep those that I know I will listen to again. Most I never do. Once I am done with the series I am done with it in audio... I will, however, buy the books if I really loved the series.
Kindle books. Well, they stay on my cloud forever so I keep all of those ... just only have a handful on my kindle at one time.
So what do you do with the books you read? Do you keep them? How do you decide? Once you decide to get rid of them... what do you do with them?
Let's start a discussion!
I am a terrible hoarder. I will buy books I've already read and enjoyed on my kindle, just to have them on my shelves. I also never purge the shelves. I will squeeze as many on there as I can. I just enjoy seeing them there and the sight makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteI only keep books that I’ll reread. The rest go to the used bookstore or are given to teacher friends for their classroom libraries. I don’t have the space to keep them all.
