Shelf Candy Saturday #4

Shelf Candy Saturday is a weekly feature for a favorite cover or covers. Shelf Candy Saturday is hosted by Five Alarm Book Reviews.  
This week's shelf candy is Dearly Departed by Lia Hable. 
I love the colors and the style. There is a real mystic Victorian style that brings in a sense of sadness. I think the cover does a great job giving the readers a picture of the mood of the story.

Q: What would your prefer: reading your favorite book over and over again until you got sick of it OR reading 100s of mediocre books? And why?

A: I would rather read 100 mediocre bookes. The reason I have is that I get bored really easy. I could only read my favorite book twice and be bored. Plus so many books so little time!

I really love mysteries. This book is great! I love everything about the book, characters, the story, the setting, and the writing.


Delia’s life starts to unravel when she comes home to hear that her mother has disappeared somewhere in the Arctic. This was the first bit of bad news… right after she learns she has to live with an aunt she has never met. Not only has she never met this aunt, she lives on the other side of the country. Delia is used to the laid back Californian life and now has to join the buys New York life.


From the moment that Delia is told about her mother’s disappearance and presumed death, she refuses to believe her mother is dead. She believes she would know, feel it ,if this were true. Once she arrives in New York and gets settled in she becomes determined to learn the truth behind her mother’s disappearance and find her mother. With the help of her new friends, the investigation is under way.


The author did a great job with this story. The writing is very vivid and thought out. I could imagine clearly everything that was happening. From the very beginning I was intrigued and couldn’t stop reading. The characters are all so real and different. Delia has lived most her life taking care of herself, her mother traveled often for business and her dad died years before. She has a good sense of responsibility and is pretty straight forward with everything she does. Her aunts are crazy but in different ways. Charley is so fun! She is kooky and wild but really cares for Delia from the moment she meets her. Her author Aunt, Patty, is just CRAZY… She is particular and snooty but still cares for Delia’s best interest, of course according to what she considered Delia’s best interest.


I was a little upset in the end but only because it is a “to be continued” book. I really want to know what is going on. A little of the mystery is solved but not all of it. I will need to get my hands on the second book.

Review:
This is pure chick lit and I loved it. It’s been a while since I was a scorned teenage girl, but I have not forgotten how that feels.


After Maddy is cheated on and dumped by her long time boyfriend of two years, she is crushed. She doesn’t understand how it happened and why it happened, especially the way it all played out. Her mother takes her on a weekend trip to a spiritual spa and there Maddy learns about karma.


Maddy then decides she will not wait for the universe to put balance back in her and her friends’ lives. They have all been hurt by past boyfriends and it’s time to do a little karma payback. Karma Club is born.


This book was really entertaining. I have been checking out at the bookstore for a while now and decided to give it a chance. Chic Lit is not normally my thing. I am really glad I gave it a chance.


Maddy is a pretty sensible, good head on her shoulders, responsible teenager in the beginning. She gets good grades and she obeys by the rules. Once the Karma Club is created, the responsible Maddy disappears and she becomes crazed for revenge.


While reading this book, I found the Karma Club missions funny, but I could see where this was all going. Maddy missed the point of karma, and learns the hard way… you don’t mess with karma.


This was a fun and quick read.
