In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the carnival, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures—if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.
All Mallory knows of The City is that her father—and every other witch there—fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the carnival.
From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and Graveminder, comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.
What made me pick this book up:
The cover was really pretty and Jenn had it on audio which is where I discovered it.
What did I like about the cover:
It's a beautiful cover. I love the colors and the milk bath. And I love the pop of the red roses.
What made me read this book:
I love Marissa Marr, it sounded interesting, the cover was beautiful, Jenn had it on audio, and it matched for a task for the spring reading challenge. Lots of great reasons.
What did I like the most:
I like the concept of the witches Vs. the Daimons. The idea of the story is interesting. But honestly that's all I liked. Well, and the spells and charms they do is cool.
What didn't I like:
I couldn't connect to the characters at all. The story didn't seem to make sense. I felt like I was listening to two different books the whole time. It really just didn't match up at all. I was lost almost the entire book.
Would I read the rest of the series/more from this author?
Nope.
Nope.
I couldn't wait to be done with this one. I ended up switching to 2.5 speed just to finish. The only good thing is that it was a short book.
BIO STUFF:
I write books. I read books.
That cover is really pretty! Too bad it was a miss on the story.
