Bookish Banter: Reading Before Bed... Wide Awake or Fast Asleep?

A little Bookish Banter to get us through.  Bookish Banter is a little bit of banter about our bookish thoughts as we have a friendly discussion over a nice cup of tea.

Can you read before Bed? Or does it put you to sleep?

Ash-

Reading doesn't usually put me to sleep, unless I'm doing the readathon and I've been reading for 12 hours straight.

But if I read before bed it doesn't generally put me to sleep. In fact I love reading before bed.

It can be late at night and John and I are out in the loft, he's playing video games and listening to his book, and I'm reading while cuddled up to him. We spend most of our nights like this.

And then he gets tired, and goes to bed, and I put Baxter (My unicorn lamp) on and I read late into the night while he sleeps, or I plug my headphones in and play solitaire on my phone, while listening to my book.

I have noticed that I prefer listening to my books at night though, so maybe it is a tired thing. I listen to books so I don't get overly tired while reading.

Hmmm........

Jenn:

It really depends for me. I am in front of a computer all day and then I read at night... mostly kindle. So sometimes my eyes get tired. However they generally let me read for about an hour before they start tryingto close. Now if I happen to be really into the book or if I had a monster coffee before going to read... I can stay up for a while reading a book.

For the most part though. I do most of my reading right before bed. I get home from work, watch my show for that night, clean up the house, eat dinner, clean kitchen, blog, get ready for bed, then I lay down and read my book. At this point it's generally around 9:30 at night. So I am already tired when I lay down to read. So as my eyes get tired they close. Even if I am not ready to fall asleep.

So do you read before bed? Can you keep your eyes open no matter what? Are you up all night reading? Does it close your eyes or put you to sleep?

  1. I read before bed too! It's actually the only time in a day where I have time to read for more than 15 minutes. Once my kiddos are in bed, chores are done, then I can usually read anywhere from 1-3 hours. And as long as I love a story it definitely doesn't put me to sleep. :)

  3. I love to read at bedtime and it doesn't put me to sleep unless I make the mistake of actually lying down to read. As long as I'm sitting up, I can read in bed for hours.

  4. I used to read from after my dinner until I went to bed and it never affected my sleeping pattern one way or the other. Recently I've become too tired to read at night so I'm taking a break from it. If I listen to an audio book in my bed, I'm asleep within twenty minutes!
