Genre Definition and Recommendation #18

Genre Definition and Recommendation is a feature where I will define a genre and a sub-genre definition and the make some recommendations.

This week I am starting a new Genre- Fantasy and will be going through the sub genres:

Comic Fantasy
Dark Fantasy

Contemporary Fantasy
Epic/High Fantasy
Sword and Sorcery
Historical Fantasy
Mythic
Urban Fantasy
Magic Realism

Superhero Fantasy

Fantasy - Definition found on Wikipedia

Fantasy is a genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot element, theme, or setting. Many works within the genre take place in imaginary worlds where magic is common. Fantasy is generally distinguished from the genre of science fiction by the expectation that it steers clear of scientific themes, though there is a great deal of overlap between the two, both of which are subgenres of speculative fiction.

Urban Fantasy  Definition found on Wikipedia

Urban fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods, as well as fictional settings. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city

*** I always thought that Urban Fantasy was Contemporary Fantasy, it was a real surprise to me that its a setting not a time period. ****
