TELL THE TRUTHOr they’ll tell it for you…Rachel’s childhood is a mess of fragmented memories, and her adult life is no less chaotic.
Her mother and daughter were her only concrete links to the past and now they are slipping through her fingers. Fuelled by the fear of losing them both, she delves into her mother’s past, fast becoming entangled in her own tragic history.
I was rummaging through new releases on Audible and found this book. The cover for sure caught my eye first and then I am a sucker for psychological thrillers and it had some great reviews on Goodreads...so I grabbed it, listened to it, and yup I loved it.
There is quite a bit going on in this story but the gist of it is that the main character, Rachel, has a mother in a nursing home. She has Alzheimer's, and in her ramblings one day in a lucid moment, she mentions that Rachel needs to know the truth about her childhood. That isn't the only strange thing happening. This was just the start. Rachel has strange friends requests on Facebook, she feels she is being watched and followed, and things just feel off everywhere around her. She finds that she must uncover her family history to understand what is going on. This of course reveals some pretty heavy secrets in her past and her mother's past.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit slow in parts but I think among many good psychological thrillers, this seems to be the making for a great read. What I loved about this read, should be no surprise, it's told in an alternating timeline between the present and the past. Slowly things come out and I was able to piece things together. I love duel timeline. These reads are by far my favorite. One way to keep me reading is to keep me anticipating the truth by only giving me bits at a time.
The story was very interesting. The suspense was there, the mystery was there, the thrills were there, and the secrets and lies were there. All of what I need in my psychological thrillers was there. I did like it very much. The only small complaint I had, I had most of the big secrets figured out before they were revealed. Now did this deter me from enjoyment of the story. No, because there were so many little things that were unknown and surprises that I still had much to look forward to in the reveals.
I find that one thing I struggle with in psychological thrillers, it seems the main characters aren't as like-able as I want them to be and I read more for the story reveals and the twists and turns than I read for the characters. The main character, Rachel, I loved her. She was a great main characters. She was very like-able with many great qualities. She didn't seem to make outrageously stupid decisions, she was careful but curious, and she didn't back down. She handled quite a bit very well.
This story was heavy on the family secrets. Much of the read was figuring out the family dynamics and the past. There wasn't any romance but tons of other relationships to love with strong mentor relationships and friendships. I actually found it quite refreshing to take the romance out just for a little while.
The ending was great. I couldn't have asked for a better ending, and even though it was fulfilling and held all the closure I needed, I still found myself wanting to follow Rachel and her life.
I found this book to be quite wonderful and look forward to reading much more by this author.
I loved it, everything I needed in a psychological thriller read.

I love a good psychological thriller, especially if it manages to be able to make things more twisty and suspenseful by using it. I think that often the characters are not as developed too, but I am glad that turned out not to be the case here! Great review x
