17- year- old Ana Maria Tei’s life has always been perfect: loving parents, good grades, and a future so bright it outshone the sun. But now words like “separation” and “divorce” are sending her world plummeting to hell. Determined to keep her family intact, Ana plans a family-bonding trip from Vienna to Tuscany. Except fate has other plans. Ana’s parents and siblings are killed in a car accident on their way to pick Ana up from school.
Enter Grim, aka Ernest. He promises to relinquish the four souls if Ana agrees to trade her soul for theirs and serve a lifetime as his novice. In order for Ana to graduate from her Reaper’s Novice station to a Soul Collector graduate, Grim puts her to test. To her horror, she finds out becoming a Reaper’s Novice didn’t happen by chance. It was preordained, and she is forced to make a choice: save her family’s souls or come to terms with who she really is and complete the task set for her.
I was very happy to join the tour for this book. The premise looked very interesting and the new cover is just beautiful. I couldn't wait to dig in. I was not disappointed it was a very captivating read.
Ana is 16, lives in Vienna with her parents, younger brother, and little sister. Her parents have been constantly fighting and she fears for her family relationships. She plans a trip to Italy, hoping the trip will rekindle the relationship between her parents. Before they can escape to Italy an accident happens and everyone but Ana was in the car. Ana is crushed, trying to keep steady in front of the crash when she is approached by Ernest, the grim reaper. He promises the souls to be left alone if she promises to become the Novice. Ana agrees and now her life is in the hands of the Reaper.
I really enjoyed the book. The plot was interesting, different than anything I have read lately and the writing was beautifully done. I was able to feel and see, among other things, everything that was going on. The author did a wonderful job on creating Ana's world and inviting the reader in to enjoy every part of that world. I was amazed. The pacing was good for most of the book, but I did feel at times it slowed down and that was a bit frustrating to me but didn't last long.
Ana was a great heroine. She was pretty bold from the very beginning. I really admired her for her persistence and not giving up on her parents. She wanted to make it work and while trying to get hem to work, she took great care in comforting her brother and sister. This spoke loudly about her character. I found it immature of her to jump right in and agree to the Grim's terms but she is still a teenager. Ana was loving, determined, and for the most part, very smart.
Wonderfully written story, great storyline, pretty cool characters, and beautiful setting.
Pick it up, it's good!
