Greg Leitich Smith

A native of Chicago, Greg Leitich Smith now lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, author Cynthia Leitich Smith, and four cats.

In addition to CHRONAL ENGINE, Greg is also the author of NINJAS, PIRANHAS, AND GALILEO and its companion book, TOFU AND T.REX. He and his wife, Cynthia Leitich Smith, are the co-authors of the picture book, SANTA KNOWS (Dutton 2006), illustrated by Steve Bjorkman.

Although he’s never built a time machine, Greg has degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Texas at Austin. In addition, he has a degree in law from The University of Michigan Law School, Ann Arbor.

John Corey Whaley

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, although my family didn't stay there long. 

My father served in the Air Force and we soon moved to Texas. Honolulu,

Hawaii was our most exotic station. I'll never forget the excitement of

winning a hula competition. Those who know me now would never guess I

had that kind of coordination. 

When we moved back to San Antonio, Texas, I missed the Aloha State, but

books served as a great distraction. Around that same time, I wrote my first

book, Fuzzy the Fox. I tried to write my first novel in high school. The

story had a strong beginning and a promising ending, but the middle of the

book ruined it all. Even though the book was not a success, the experience

taught me much about the writing process, especially about revision.

In college, I took a children's literature course that inspired me to write

books for children and teens I eventually went on to graduate from Hollins University with an M.A. in children's literature. In addition to my book publications, I've written magazine articles for Highlights for Children, Wee Ones Magazine, and Holiday Crafts 4 Kids. In addition to writing, I also teach at the Institute of Children's Literature. 

I love to read, and some of my favorite authors are: Mildred Taylor, Han

Nolan, David LaRochelle, S.E. Hinton, Karen Hesse, Judy Blume, Avi, Eoin

Colfer, and Christopher Paul Curtis. The list could go on and on! 

I live north of Austin with my supportive husband, Michael, and my dogs

Buster and JoJo. When not writing, Michael and I enjoy traveling and have

a goal to travel to as many national parks as possible.

Trudy

Trudy's having a hard time at school: math class isn't going well, and her best friend, the one she pinky-swore she would always be friends with, has found a new group to hang out with. To top things off, her parents are old — really old — and while she loves them with all her heart, she dislikes it when other people mistake them for her grandparents. When Trudy's father starts acting strangely, Trudy and her mother can't figure out what the problem is. But when he forgets to pick Trudy up from school and starts to put groceries away in the wrong place, they decide to take him to the doctor. Once Trudy's father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Trudy and her mother are faced with some tough decisions.

This is a touching, beautifully told story that young people relate to, particularly those who have parents or grandparents dealing with an illness. Trudy’s challenges and her strength in dealing with them make her a heroine with whom young readers identify.

I was born in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. My family immigrated into the U.S. when I was six years old. I grew up in Eagle Pass, a small, border town in South Texas. Eagle Pass is the setting of both, my debut novel in verse, UNDER THE MESQUITE, and my 2nd novel, SUMMER OF THE MARIPOSAS, coming in the fall of 2012 from TU Books. After high school, I went off to Alpine in West Texas to study to become a teacher. I have a BA in Theatre Arts and English from Sul Ross State University. In Alpine, I met my husband, Jim. We have 3 sons, a dog, and a cat. We moved to Somerset many years ago. We love living the simple life in the country, where I get to be close to what I love, nature.

First on my list today... 

Libba Bray 

What is it about writing an author bio that gives me that deer-in-headlights feeling? It's not exactly like I'm going to say "I was born in Alabama…" and somebody's going to jump up and snarl, "Oh yeah? Prove it!" At least I hope not.

I think what gets me feeling itchy is all that emphasis on the facts of a life, while all the juicy, relevant, human oddity stuff gets left on the cutting room floor. I could tell you the facts–I lived in Texas for most of my life; I live in New York City with my husband and six-year-old son now; I have freckles and a lopsided smile; I'm allergic to penicillin.

But that doesn't really give you much insight into me. That doesn't tell you that I stuck a bead up my nose while watching TV when I was four and thought I'd have to go to the ER and have it cut out. Or that I once sang a punk version of "Que Sera Sera" onstage in New York City. Or that I made everyone call me "Bert" in ninth grade for no reason that I can think of. See what I mean?

God is in the details. So with that in mind, here is my bio. Sort of.

First up: an author I have only read two book by so far, but more on my list!

Neal Shusterman

About this author

Award-winning author Neal Shusterman grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he began writing at an early age. After spending his junior and senior years of high school at the American School of Mexico City, Neal went on to UC Irvine, where he made his mark on the UCI swim team, and wrote a successful humor column. Within a year of graduating, he had his first book deal, and was hired to write a movie script.

In the years since, Neal has made his mark as a successful novelist, screenwriter, and television writer. As a full-time writer, he claims to be his own hardest task-master, always at work creating new stories to tell. His books have received many awards from organizations such as the International Reading Association, and the American Library Association, as well as garnering a myriad of state and local awards across the country. Neal's talents range from film directing (two short films he directed won him the coveted CINE Golden Eagle Awards) to writing music and stage plays – including book and lyrical contributions to “American Twistory,” which is currently playing in Boston. Writing has gotten me in and out of trouble since I was 15 (back then, mostly just in trouble.) For 10 years, I designed &/or wrote for lots of video games, one of which was nominated for “Most Innovative Game Design,” but I lost to a rapping onion. If you know games you get why my two bad beagles are named Zelda and Kirby.

School: I spent more years in it than a person ever should, because let’s face it, reading books is so much better than having a job. I fell in love with American literature at Amherst and Yale, earned an MA in English from Stanford, and studied creative writing under the late great poet George MacBeth at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. I taught Intro to Film as a TA at Yale and Romantic Poetry as a TA at Stanford. Don’t tell the people at Yale but sometimes I taught the section before I’d seen the movie it was about...

I live in Santa Monica, CA, with my family, most of whom were enslaved into working with me in one form or another on my forthcoming YA book for Little, Brown. I’m not kidding; when my daughters wanted to go to school I said “Why are you so selfish? Get back in there and edit,” and by said I mean yelled and maybe threw things, it’s all a haze. I have a writing partner named Kami and she is why we ever get anything done. (Well, K and the daughter-slaves...)

First up... an author I have not had the privalage of reading as of yet, but he is on my list.

Jesse Andrews 

Jesse Andrews is a novelist, musician, and screenwriter. He has worked previously as a travel writer, tour guide, and receptionist at a German youth hostel. Jesse was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and is a graduate of Schenley High School and Harvard University. He has also lived in San Sebastián, Spain; Berlin, Germany; Boston, MA; and Brooklyn, NY, where he currently makes his home. It was not until college that he even made out with a girl for more than five minutes. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is his first novel.

I have already read quite a bit of the authors before the list came out...I will try to get as many of those reviews up as I can before I the date of the festival. I have purchased quite a bit of the books to have signed for giveaways. I am so very excited!

I have more authors to showcase for the Austin Teen Book Festival. I am so excited. Here are some more that will be coming to Austin.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes 

Jennifer Lynn Barnes (who mostly goes by Jen) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has been, in turn, a competitive cheerleader, a volleyball player, a dancer, a debutante, a primate cognition researcher, a teen model, a comic book geek, and a lemur aficionado. She's been writing for as long as she can remember, finished her first full book (which she now refers to as a "practice book" and which none of you will ever see) when she was still in high school, and then wrote Golden the summer after her freshman year in college, when she was nineteen. 

Jen graduated high school in 2002, and from Yale University with a degree in cognitive science (the study of the brain and thought) in May of 2006. She'll be spending the 2006-2007 school year abroad, doing autism research at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom

I have not read Raised by Wolves yet but I have it and it's ready to be read!

I am so very excited and want to squeal like I am 16 again. Sophie Jordan will be there again. She was there last year and was so nice, but I hadn't read her book yet. This year I have read the first two and anxiously awaiting the last book. YAY!!!!

I live in an extremely Brazilian section of an extremely Greek neighborhood—Astoria, Queens, which is just to the right of Manhattan. (That's as you face Manhattan. If you were, say, lying on your back in the middle of Central Park with your head in a northerly position, we would be to your left) I live there with my wife who has a blog and our two cats who do not. One day I hope to have a very large dog that I can name Jerry Lee Lewis.

I used to write plays (I actually have an MFA in it, which is currently number 8 on US News and World Report's annual list of the top twenty most useless masters degrees) and now I write books for teens. I've written two. One was about a girl who wanted to be a rock star and could graciously be called a learning experience. 

The second, is The Eleventh Plague and it comes out Sept. 1, a fact I still find pretty amazing.
