Wee Reads: The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

Ever since Finn was born, and even before then, we would read to him. We wanted to show him reading from an early age. Now he loves us to read the same books, over, and over, and over. But it is the sweetest thing, when he likes to pick out a book and climb into our laps.

Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only letters, all saying the same thing: We quit!
Beige is tired of playing second fiddle to Brown. Blue needs a break from coloring all that water, while Pink just wants to be used. Green has no complaints, but Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking to each other.

What is Duncan to do? Debut author Drew Daywalt and New York Times bestseller Oliver Jeffers create a colorful solution in this playful, imaginative story that will have children laughing and playing with their crayons in a whole new way.

Do you like this book?
Yeah! I like all the colors and the rainbow crayon!

What's your favorite part of the book?
When there is a pink crayon! Pink is my favorite color and it's not a girl color. It's a boy color too. And the end is my favorite part because I like all the colors and all the animals and the humans and airplanes and cars and boats and the hippo riding on a bus.

What do you think of the cover?
I like it. The red crayon is sad. And the blue is my favorite because he's a short crayon.

Do you want me to read it again?
Yepp!

The Day the Crayons Quit is one of our favorite books. Finn absolutely loves reading all the letters that the crayons wrote to the little boy, and he loves naming off the colors.

It's a really fun book to read, and it has some great humor in it. With all the pages either holding a letter written by a crayon who has a complaint, or a page that was colored by that crayon, it's all fun to look at and the illustrations are just beautiful.

And Finn always acts so excited when we get to the last page and it is all rainbow colored. It's his favorite page.

Ever since his childhood in one of Ohio’s most haunted houses, writer director Drew Daywalt has been writing escapist fantasy and building worlds of his own. With a degree in Creative Writing, and a concentration in Children’s Literature from Emerson College in Boston, Daywalt set off to Hollywood where he spent years writing for Disney and Universal on such beloved shows as Timon & Pumba, Buzz Lightyear, and Woody Woodpecker, and where his animated series The Wacky World of Tex Avery garnered an Emmy nomination.

His first trip into live action landed him studio screenwriting and feature film directing work with such Hollywood luminaries as Quentin Tarrantino, Lawrence Bender, Tony Scott, Brett Ratner and Jerry Bruckheimer.

With an eye toward picture book writing, Daywalt’s first book THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, debuted on the New York Times Best Seller’s List in June 2013, and has since become a Number One Best Seller.
