Genre Definition and Recommendation #27

Genre Definition and Recommendation is a feature where I will define a genre and a sub-genre definition and the make some recommendations.

Historical Novel- Definition found on Wikipedia

According to Encyclopædia Britannica, a historical novel is "a novel that has as its setting a usually significant period of history and that attempts to convey the spirit, manners, and social conditions of a past age with realistic details and fidelity (which is in some cases only apparent fidelity) to historical fact. The work may deal with actual historical characters...or it may contain a mixture of fictional and historical characters.

Historical Romance Definition found on Wikipedia

Historical romance is a subgenre of two literary genres, the romance novel and the historical novel.

My Recommendations:

Belle Epoque
Belle Epoque by Elizabeth Ross

When Maude Pichon runs away from provincial Brittany to Paris, her romantic dreams vanish as quickly as her savings. Desperate for work, she answers an unusual ad. The Durandeau Agency provides its clients with a unique service—the beauty foil. Hire a plain friend and become instantly more attractive.

Monsieur Durandeau has made a fortune from wealthy socialites, and when the Countess Dubern needs a companion for her headstrong daughter, Isabelle, Maude is deemed the perfect foil.

But Isabelle has no idea her new "friend" is the hired help, and Maude's very existence among the aristocracy hinges on her keeping the truth a secret. Yet the more she learns about Isabelle, the more her loyalty is tested. And the longer her deception continues, the more she has to lose.

Vixen (Flappers, #1)
Vixen by Jillian Larkin

If you love The Great Gatsby, you'll want to read the Flappers series.

Jazz . . . Booze . . . Boys . . . It’s a dangerous combination.

Every girl wants what she can’t have. Seventeen-year-old Gloria Carmody wants the flapper lifestyle—and the bobbed hair, cigarettes, and music-filled nights that go with it. Now that she’s engaged to Sebastian Grey, scion of one of Chicago’s most powerful families, Gloria’s party days are over before they’ve even begun . . . or are they?

Clara Knowles, Gloria’s goody-two-shoes cousin, has arrived to make sure the high-society wedding comes off without a hitch—but Clara isn’t as lily-white as she appears. Seems she has some dirty little secrets of her own that she’ll do anything to keep hidden. . . .

Lorraine Dyer, Gloria’s social-climbing best friend, is tired of living in Gloria’s shadow. When Lorraine’s envy spills over into desperate spite, no one is safe. And someone’s going to be very sorry. . . .

  1. Trashy, Bodice rippery historical romance is a guilty pleasure of mine. Virginia Henley, Johanna Lindsay have always been some of my favorites. I really love historical fiction that that focuses on the monarchy, they were quite interesting! I also love those southern historical epic sagas by authors like Eugenia Price, those were so atmostpheric that I remember wishing that I could been a part of the antebellum south and Savannah society.

  2. I am not a fan of historical fiction, but I AM a fan of historical novel covers! I mean just look at some of the ones you mentioned up there, I could stare at them for hours (but probably never read them!) Neat feature!
