Trapped in the underground theater world of 1890s New Orleans, Hale Ferrer has only one goal: escape. But not without Teeny, the orphan-girl she rescued from the streets and promised to protect.

Freddie Lovel, Hale's wealthy Parisian suitor, seems to be the easy solution. If only his touch could arouse her interest like Beau's, the penniless stagehand who captures her heart.

Denying her fears, Hale is poised to choose love until an evil lurking in their cabaret-home launches a chain of events that could cost her everything.

I was so excited for this book. I love a good historical fiction and it's been a while since I found a really good one. My need to find one is over. This book was wow. I was in love from the first page with the everything about this book. The writing, the story, the characters, the romance... oh my it had everything I needed. I loved loved loved it.

Hale is a cabaret girl. She lost her mother when she was young and her father was gone ever before that. She is 17 years old about to turn 18 and she is living in the theater where some pretty rotten stuff happens to the girls who live there, some willing, some not so much. Hale is there to support herself and to support a younger girl, Teeny,  who she found at the door starving and filthy a few years back. Teeny is 12 soon to be 13. Hale is doing what she can to get away from the theater before the rotten stuff sneaks into Teeny's life. Her plan, marry the young and rick Paris man that is her greatest fan. Everything is going according to plan until Beau shows up and Guy, the evil villian of the story enters into the picture. She falls for Beau and now that Guy has his eye on Teeny, the need to get her out is on double-time.

Wow Wow Wow!!!! I loved every bit of this book. There were some really hard things to get through. The book was full of not nice things but the writing was so wonderful in this book, the bad stuff just seemed to fit. It felt so real! I was so involved in Hale's life, I wanted to scream at her to her and at others around her so many times throughout, I can't believe I was able to read in the library.

The setting was also amazing. In the 1890,s (which is a time I have always loved to read about) and in a cabaret theater. It was a fun setting, scary and dirty, but fun.  I loved to read about the songs, the dances, and the costumes. It add just the right amount of sass to the story.

Hale was an amazing character. She lived to see so much and leaned about horrible things at such a young age. She was a strong character and very selfless. She only cared about what was best for Teeny. She was kind of naive at times but for good reason. She has lived under the protection of the man who runs the cabaret for so long, she really thought she was invincible.. she never depended on anyone but herself. When the day comes she needs to ask for a little bit of help, she gets stubborn and learns the hard way that friends are good. I also loved loved loved Beau. There were a few time he angered me. He was a dumb man in a couple of scenes that I wanted to slap, assuming he knew all that was going on... but he didn't and he found out he really was s dumb oaf. But for the most part he was sweet and caring. A bit of a hero. Another character I absolutely loved was Roland, Hale's best friend, oh he was just amazing. Fun, charismatic, caring... just oh my.  Freddie is so sweet too. He really is quite a catch. He treats Hale good and he deserves  to be happy. So many wonderful characters!

I would recommend this book for anyone that loves a good romance full of suspense, hard times, and a kick butt heroine. I cannot wait, really I need now, book number 2. I need to see who it all ends. You just must read this book. Really... It's so GOOD!

  1. Yay! I'm so happy you loved my book, Jenn! Your post makes me smile! I loved all the characters, too, and their story is so dense. I'm working on #2 now--the goal is late winter/early spring. Thanks for reading and reviewing! :o) <3
