Cover Up: Recent Reads #8

This feature I will just gab, remark, feature book covers.

For this cover up I will be comparing two different editions of the same book, from books I've read recently. I will try to do this every couple weeks or so. Can be from a different country, or just a different edition in general

Dead is the New Black by Marlene Perez
Jenn review here and my review here
Welcome to Nightshade, California—a small town full of secrets. It’s home to the pyschic Giordano sisters, who have a way of getting mixed up in mysteries. During their investigations, they run across everything from pom-pom-shaking vampires to shape-shifting boyfriends to a clue-spewing jukebox. With their psychic powers and some sisterly support, they can crack any case!
Teenage girls are being mysteriously attacked all over town, including at Nightshade High School, where Daisy Giordano is a junior. When Daisy discovers that a vampire may be the culprit, she can’t help but suspect head cheerleader Samantha Devereaux, who returned from summer break with a new “look.” Samantha appears a little . . . well, dead, and all the most popular kids at school are copying her style.

Is looking dead just another fashion trend for Samantha, or is there something more sinister going on? To find out, Daisy joins the cheerleading squad.

American Cover                                               Italian Cover
Dead Is the New Black (Dead Is, #1)                               I segreti di Nightshade (Dead Is, #1)

I think the Italian cover is cute. But I prefer the American version.

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
An astonishing technique for recovering and cloning dinosaur DNA has been discovered. Now humankind’s most thrilling fantasies have come true. Creatures extinct for eons roam Jurassic Park with their awesome presence and profound mystery, and all the world can visit them—for a price. Until something goes wrong. . . .
American Cover                                               Other American Cover
Jurassic Park (Jurassic Park, #1)                               Jurassic Park (Jurassic Park, #1)

I like the one on the right better. But they're both okay.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Winning will make you famous.
Losing means certain death.
The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The 'tributes' are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.
When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.
American Cover                                               German Cover
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)                               Tödliche Spiele (Die Tribute von Panem, #1)

The German cover is stunning, I absolutely love it.

The Mist by Stephen King

A near drowning…a coma for days…and then…
Olivia wakes up to realize she doesn’t remember. Not just the accident—but anything from the last four years. Not high school. Not Matt, the guy who is apparently her boyfriend. Not the reason she and Jules are no longer friends. Nothing.
That’s when it hits her—the accident may not have taken her life, but it took something just as vital: her memory. The harder she tires to remember things, the foggier everything gets, and figuring out who she is feels impossible when everyone keeps telling her who she was.
But then there’s Walker. The guy who saved her. The one who broke her ribs pumping life back into her lungs. The hardened boy who keeps his distance despite Olivia’s attempts to thank him.
With her feelings growing for Walker, tensions rising with Matt, and secrets she can’t help but feel are being kept from her, Olivia must find her place in a life she doesn’t even remember living.
American Cover                                                     Estonian Cover
    The Mist                                  Udu

I don't really care for either of these to be honest. But I think the Estonian is a bit better.

Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics
Review here
When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner’s family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries.

When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn’t right on the prairie. She’s heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can’t be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

    1. I've noticed that as well. Honestly Italian covers always seem to be better.

  2. For Jurassic Park, I like that they both use the same dinosaur image. At least that's consistent.

  5. I like the left version of Jurassic Park best but wish that there was a lovely drawing of the T Rex or raptors attacking on it instead! I prefer the American covers for The Hunger Games as that is the set I have, and the Italian cover for Dead is the new black.

  6. I always love looking at covers from different countries. Seems like the non-U.S. ones are almost always better, lol.

  7. I agree that the foreign covers are more eyecatching. US needs to get with the program :)

  8. I'm kinda torn on the two versions of Dead is the New Black. And yeah the Jurassic Park on the right- I like that one better too. The Hunger Games- the left one is always a favorite, but I've seen it so much- I kinda like the one on the right, with her peeking through leaves.

I definitely like the Estonian version of The Mist better, with the tentacles.
