Teaser Tuesday: Deadly Sweet by Lola Dodge and A Town Called Vengeance by Kevin Wolf

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Books and a Beat. Bloggers choose two
sentences out of our current read to pique others' curiosity.

Deadly Sweet (The Spellwork Syndicate, #1)
Deadly Sweet by Lola Dodge

Anise Wise loves three things: baking, potion making, and reading her spellbooks in blissful silence. She might not be the most powerful witch, but enchantment is a rare skill, and her ability to bake with magic is even rarer. Too bad no one wants witchcraft on their campus. Anise’s dream of attending pastry school crumbles with rejection letter after rejection letter.
Desperate to escape her dead-end future, Anise contacts the long-lost relative she’s not supposed to know about. Great Aunt Agatha owns the only magic bakery in the US, and she suddenly needs a new apprentice. Anise is so excited she books it to New Mexico without thinking to ask what happened to the last girl.
The Spellwork Syndicate rules the local witches in Taos, but as “accidents” turn into full-out attacks on Anise’s life, their promises to keep her safe are less and less reassuring. Her cranky bodyguard is doing his best, but it’s hard to fight back when she has no idea who’s the enemy. Or why she became their target.
If Anise can’t find and stop whoever wants her dead, she’ll be more toasted than a crème brûlée.
Who knew baking cakes could be so life or death?

Teaser:
Magical flames were licking at my fingertips and sparks crackled against my jeans. The only real thing was the call of the vortex.

Ash's Thoughts:
This is actually a pretty cute book from what I've read.

A Town Called Vengeance
A Town Called Vengeance by Kevin Wolf

Faded words on yellowed newsprint tell stories of an Apache war party led by a she-wolf. For the frontier newspaperman, Kepler, the accounts beckon him to finish the battles he fought in the Colorado mountains.

Kepler’s quest brings stagecoach attacks, waterless days in the Arizona desert, and an unholy alliance with a creature of darkness. In a barroom in a town called Vengeance, Kepler faces down the gunman that even Doc Holiday feared. Renegades and gunrunners stand in his way. And his sacrifice may cost him the woman he loves.

Will his crusade for justice turn to a fight for revenge? In a battle fought with silver bullets and fire, will Kepler’s courage be enough?

Teaser:

The driver's rifle cracked. Dirt jumped a yard in front of the wolf. All sounds stopped, and the desert went ghostly quiet.

Jenn's Thoughts:

I am only a few pages in. Not many thoughts right now. I like the tone the book has set. It sounds like a good western may be coming my way. We will see, I am excited!
