Gina Royal is the definition of average—a shy Midwestern housewife with a happy marriage and two adorable children. But when a car accident reveals her husband’s secret life as a serial killer, she must remake herself as Gwen Proctor—the ultimate warrior mom.
With her ex now in prison, Gwen has finally found refuge in a new home on remote Stillhouse Lake. Though still the target of stalkers and Internet trolls who think she had something to do with her husband’s crimes, Gwen dares to think her kids can finally grow up in peace.
But just when she’s starting to feel at ease in her new identity, a body turns up in the lake—and threatening letters start arriving from an all-too-familiar address. Gwen Proctor must keep friends close and enemies at bay to avoid being exposed—or watch her kids fall victim to a killer who takes pleasure in tormenting her. One thing is certain: she’s learned how to fight evil. And she’ll never stop.
What made me pick this book up:
It was on audio, and it was by Rachel Caine and I've read books by her and loved them

What did I like about the cover:
It's obviously very ominous and creepy. I love what the boat represents with the lake and how dark and foggy everything looks. It's fantastic and great for the book.

What made me read this book:
It sounded creepy and awesome, it was on audio, it was written by Rachel Caine and it matched for a task. So it was perfect.

What did I like the most:
I loved basically everything about it. It is so well written it gives you all the feels. From the moment the book starts, it is one mystery after another. Of course it was forever since I read what it was about, so it was like going in there blind.

The characters are likable and well written. The main character obviously suffers from PTSD, but honestly that doesn't make her any less badass. She's a good mother and does what she thinks she needs to do to protect her kids.
If I went through what she did I don't know how I Would keep going. I would be terrified every day.

Like I said, it's one mystery after another. I like not know what's going to happen and not being able to figure it out, and this book is glorious at not letting you figure it out. As soon as you think you have it, nope, another twist.

It had me on the edge of my seat, staring off into space, with my mouth wide open. And I think that's just what a mystery thriller should do to you.

What didn't I like:
There was a few parts that were such bad luck, or bad things happening that I literally said "oh come on!" out loud.

I won't give anything away, but there was a few parts like that.

That's really all I didn't like, and it's not even that I didn't like it, except that I didn't like it happening to her.
Like it really just pissed me off that it was happening to her.

Would I read the rest of the series/more from this author?
HELL YES

This book was amazing!
