My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Mini review:

What made me read this book:
I actually saw a trailer for the movie and fell in love with it. So then I just had to read it.

What did I like the most:
I loved this entire book. I fell in love with it hard. The main character is amazing. She has every reason to whine and hate her life, but she just doesn't. Olly is sweet and understanding. Carla is awesome and very funny. It's just all around a love, sweet and amazing book.

What didn't I like:
The idea of being stuck inside forever. It makes me want to panic. The book does get pretty sad at parts. I don't care much for her mother either I understand she's just scared and wants to protect her daughter, but it all feels like too much. Maybe it's because I'm not in her position.

Mini Review:
The movie was alright. I think if it wasn't based off a book, or the book wasn't so amazing I would feel more for the movie. I feel like the movie was rushed and you really didn't get to feel the intensity or the love of their relationship.

Jenn: The book was so good guys. I was so excited about finally getting to the movie and like Ash said, it's alright. Just okay. I was actually dissapointed. i didn't feel in the movie like I felt in the book. In the book I was consumed by emotions and fear and joy and heartbreak. In the movie not so much.

Let's compare:
Did I see the movie or read the book first?
 I read the book first.

Jenn: I read the book first too. Actually right after Ash did.

Like the movie or the book better?
The book! With the book you get to see and feel and hear everything Maddie is feeling. And I feel like for something like this, you need to be able to feel that to feel the love.

Jenn: Oh my goodness the book is so much better! for the same reason Ash mentioned. Being from Maddie's head I just felt so much more in the book.

How does it compare?
The book does so much better at making you feel and see the love. I feel like the movie was rushed and missed some really big points.

Jenn: I think they did an okay conversion to moive. They changed some parts I wouldn't have changed. I thought some of those things were very important to the story. Like the truth if Ollie's family. Somethings should never be changed. I think if one has not read the book they may really like the movie.

Do the actors match the characters in the book?
Okay but Amandla is perfect. Perfect for Maddy, perfect actress. She was amazing. The only part I didn't like, is that she was supposed to have really long beautiful hair, and it's short in the movie. Olly was pretty good, except he should have blue eyes, and black hair. And definitely should not have had that long of hair. I pictured Carla shorter and more plump. But I think for the most part they did pretty well.

Jenn: So I really loved her they picked for Maddie and for Ollie. I think they did an exception job with the looks and the actors did a great job with the acting. This is one thing I think they got just right.  Mow Carla.... I didn't like who played her. She was too young looking and not mama enough. I saw Carla the same way that Ash saw Carla, plump and soft, more grandmother/mother qualties.

Major differences?
The biggest part to me, is that in the book, Olly's dad is abusive and an alcoholic. And in the movie that isn't mentioned at all. It made it seem just like he was kind of a jerk. I feel like that's something that is so important to talk about and they completely skimmed over it. There was a bunch of little things that they changed.
In the book they used email and IM, in the movie they text.
When Olly meets Maddy for the first time, in the book he's big into parkour and did all kinds of handstands and climbing and all of that. In the movie, she says she can do a handstand.
I also wish they would have introduced Olly's friend from the book. But he was never mentioned in the movie, and he was great.
I feel like there is a lot of things that they should have, at the very least, mentioned in the movie that were important in the book, and they didn't.

Jenn:  Okay so the major changes I didn't l ike were the fact that Ollie is from a very abusive father. This is so important in the book and I feel like the movie just made his father out to be a jackass. Not that an abusive father isn't a jackass but there was no mention ever to his abusiveness or drunkeness. Also I know these weren't as big... but the trip to Hawaii was so different than the book. Some things and people were cut out of this part and I didn't feel it like I did in the book. Oh one more, the visit to Carlas right before the Hawaii trip. That didn't exist in the movie. I guess they felt it wasn't important and I guess its not so much but I think Carla played such a bigger part in Maddie's life in the book than in the movie. The relationship they had just didn't come out in the movie like it did in the book. Her mother also seemed more down to earth and nicer in the movie. I think she was protrayed slightly more likeable int he movie. There were lots of small changes too. like the game of phonics scrabble Maddie and her mother always play... in the book Maddie always loses, in the movie she always wins. The headstand scene was played out differently and I didn't like that either. Like I said before. If you never read the book, these things don't seem important but if you read the book you know how these little things are very important!

Fun Facts?
There is a scene in the movie where the astronaut is sitting on a bar stool in a diner that Maddy created. This scene is a reference to the famous 1942 painting "Nighthawks" by American artist Edward Hopper. - Found via IMDb

  1. I've had this ebook for the longest time and have only glimpsed a bit of the movie. It does seem interesting and from the little part of the movie I saw, the mom was a complete turn off. I guess in her position any mother would be? But yeah, that does suck that the movie skimmed over something has serious as alcohol and abuse. Thanks for your reviews.

  2. I absolutely adored this book, and thought they did a great job with the adaptation. The casting was fabulous, and the music was so well placed. It definitely captured the emotion of this book for me.
