Bookish Banter: What Do You Use for Bookshelf Fillers?

A little Bookish Banter to get us through.  Bookish Banter is a little bit of banter about our bookish thoughts as we have a friendly discussion over a nice cup of tea.

Do you fill your bookshelves strictly with books? Or do you leave room for decor?

Ash:

I currently use mine only for books. I have too many books, and too little space to try to fill it with decor. I am, however, going to be buying a new shelf, so maybe then I can put some decor on the shelves. Until I buy more books of course...

I always see on Pinterest and such where they have just a few books and the rest is decor... and I love how it looks. But at the same time, I want more, more, and more books...

I get a lot of questions on my Instagram feed about how to style built-ins. They are such a great architectural feature to have in a home!  I have to admit that when I walk into a house that has built-ins, I get pretty excited about it.  They are great for adding interest and coziness to a space...20 Bookshelf Ideas That Will Beautify Your HomeHow to Style a Bookcase. While these items aren't necessarily what would go with your decor, they show how to use a nice variety of items to style a bookcase. Your eye wants to bounce around and see everything!

Don't get me wrong, this looks so pretty and clean. But just think about how many books these could hold!?
I also see on Pinterest where they have some books lying on their side, and they just make it look so great. But I just can't wrap my head around doing that...

For now, I think I will just stick to my funkos on top of my shelves.

Jenn:

I like to mainly fill my shelves with books. I mean who has the room to add decor when there are so many books to put on the shelves...

Also, its hard to see the books and find the books if there is a bunch of stuff in front of my books.

I am really OCD and my bookshelves are for books... except the very top shelf... I can't reach books up there so I put decor... and I have decor shelves for decor. Makes sense right. I think so.

  1. It's hard to comprehend but I don't currently own any bookshelves. We moved about a year ago and with everything else for the house to buy, I just haven't had the time or money to buy some! My books are currently wandering around in dusty piles in boxes, while the rest of my collection are in two other houses. I hope to get them home eventually.

  2. Before I moved, I kept all the books on the shelves level with the edge, not pushed back. In my new shelves, they are all pushed back and I have put little things in the corners. I especially LOVE to use some of my pretty book ends, but I rarely get to use them since I fill the spaces so fast. I do however use the lay on the side technique, mainly because I need to make more room on a particular shelf. I also have things hanging off the sides, like lanyards and badges from cons.

  3. Most of my bookshelves are just for books. One of them has a lamp, a music box, and some stuff I got while traveling. Other than that, it’s all books.
