Staying quiet will destroy her, but speaking up will destroy everyone.

Kate Franklin’s life changes for the better when her dad lands a job at Beacon Prep, an elite private school with one of the best basketball teams in the state. She begins to date a player on the team and quickly gets caught up in a world of idolatry and entitlement, learning that there are perks to being an athlete.

But those perks also come with a price. Another player takes his power too far and Kate is assaulted at a party. Although she knows she should speak out, her dad’s vehemently against it and so, like a canary sent into a mine to test toxicity levels and protect miners, Kate alone breathes the poisonous secrets to protect her dad and the team. The world that Kate was once welcomed into is now her worst enemy, and she must decide whether to stay silent or expose the corruption, destroying her father’s career and bringing down a town’s heroes.

Canary has been on TBR list for quite a while and i am glad that I was finally able to move it to my To Read list. This book was everything I hoped for and more. I loved it from page one to the last page. Beautifully written, compelling, heart-wrenching, and so real. I couldn't put the book down once I started.

Kate's life has been turned upside down since her mother died. She gave up basketball, lost friends, and lost her way. Not only has she lost a mother but she feels she has lost a father too. Now her father has accepted a new coaching job at a pristine school and he wants Kate and her brother, Brett, to enroll and start the new school year at a new school. Kate jumps at the chance to start over when Brett deals with it very negatively. Kate soon finds herself dating a basketball player at a school where basketball rules, friends with the popular girls, and going to parties she has never been too. Things in her life seem to be going well until she finds herself in a situation she doesn't know how to deal with. She must learn to speak her mind, speak up, and when exactly to do it.

This book was very powerful. It drew me in from the very beginning. Kate was very easy to relate to. I loved and hated her character. I loved the story and found myself tearing up very early and very often. The writing was just spectacular. The story was told from first person, Kate's point of view, and parts are in story form but there is verse at the beginning of chapters that are just beautiful. The story was told in a very realistic manner for me and I was able to connect and feel for Kate and her brother quickly.

Kate was a wonderful character that I totally fell for. I loved her and at times hated her. I was able to see where she was headed and even though my heart was screaming at her to stop, walk away, get out while you can... I knew she needed to go through what she was headed for. She needed to grow and throughout the book she did grow. She made some very bad decisions for all the right but wrong reasons. She was so lost and so sad, I wanted her to find her happy ending but knew she was looking in the wrong places.

The story was about Kate's journey but there was so much more in this book. Family issues, relationship issues, teen issues, loss,  healing, hope, and the list could just continue. I love realistic fiction when its written well, and this one for sure was written well... beyond that really. This book is on my must read list and my to buy list. It was exceptional.

There are not enough words or even the right words to describe my love for this book. It was just AWESOME!!!!

Rachele Alpine

Rachele Alpine is a lover of sushi, fake mustaches, and Michael Jackson. One of her first jobs was at a library, but it didn’t last long, because all she did was hide in the third-floor stacks and read. Now she’s a little more careful about when and where she indulges her reading habit. By day she’s a high school English teacher, and by night she writes with the companionship of the world’s cutest dog, Radley, a big cup of coffee, and a full bag of gummy peaches. Rachele lives with her husband in Cleveland, Ohio, but dreams of moving back to Boston, the city she fell in love with while attending graduate school there.
