A noblewoman, an assassin, and a soul-stealing necklace....
Sora planned on running away from her wedding, but she never expected to be kidnapped! Dumped into a world of magical races, arcane jewelry and forgotten lore, she finds herself at the mercy of a dangerous assassin, haunted by an even darker past. She yearns for freedom, but he won’t let her go—not when her Cat’s Eye necklace is the only thing that can save his life.
But the necklace itself presents a problem. It is an ancient device from the long forgotten War of the Races, and its magic has the ability to steal souls. Can Sora learn to wield its power—or will the power wield her?
Review:
I love this cover. The colors, the art, the font, they all drew me in. It’s soft, but wild, creative, and fun. The cover is very much the feel of this book. This story was just awesome. I love high fantasy, if it is done well. This one was done very well. I was intrigued from the very first page and just kept reading.
Short and sweet of the story: Sora is a young teenage girl, set to marry someone she doesn’t know in order to further her father. A father she doesn’t feel any connection to. She is set to run away, she doesn’t want this life. During the party before the ceremony (a little backwards for my customs) an assassin crashes and she is kidnapped. Right before the party she found an old necklace she believes to have belonged to her mother. Little does she know the power this necklace holds? Sora soon finds herself on a journey with two wolfies and assassin.
This book was very fast paced and a very quick read for me. I couldn’t put the book down once I started it. The beginning had me intrigued and it quickly led into a wild adventure with an amazing cast. The world that the author created was very original for me. The story of the elements getting together and creating the races and the gods and goddesses and the magic that surrounds them was very interesting to me. The story is high fantasy and does focus on the characters, their past and their journey and the characters are what really make the story
I liked Sora, a lot. She was raised in a very cushioned but loveless world. She never knew her mother and she was raised by a father that showed no want or desire to have a bond with her. She was set to marry and refused to live the life that was panned out in front of her. She wanted adventure, she wanted choice, so she devised a pretty well thought plan in mere minutes before the wedding. She was very brave throughout the book and she grew so much. She started soft and came out with the beginnings of a warrior. The story held a lot of eye opening moments for her and she took them in stride.
The assassin, Crash was a very hard, cold, loveless character… he is an assassin. He kidnapped Sora because she was there and she could identify him. I am not sure why he didn’t kill her. It seemed strange, if he only cared about her being a witness and he has no issue with killing, why didn’t he just kill her. I am glad he didn’t there would be no story, but that part stumps me just a bit. Anyways, Crash is affected by Sora, more than he ever thought possible and learns that he may just care for her.
I loved the wolfies, they were sarcastic, caring, and made me laugh. I could see that Sora and Dorian had a special connection and he was not as cold as Crash. For sure Dorian was my favorite character. The other Wolfy, Burn, made some appearances, but was more in the background, but what I know of him, I like.
I felt very connected in this story and I enjoyed the growth of each character and the bond they all seemed to form. It was refreshing to not have any insta-love or love triangles, although I do hope the next book holds some romance. The ending was a bit abrupt to me and found a few tears were shed. I am really glad I had the next book to start up right away.
