Follow Friday #19 and TGIF #4

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by
Rachel of Parajunkee and Alison of Alison Can Read!

Q: Activity! Dreamcast your current read.

A: I am gonna bow out of this question. I am reading 4 different books and I really don't have dream casts. When my favorite books are turned into movies, I just sit and wait to see who they cast. I try to not think about who I would want to play my characters, no one is ever good enough for what is in my head. I settle for whoever they cast.

This week I am waiting on....

Rift (Nightshade Prequel #1)

August 7th 2012
I love the Nightshade series and cannot wait to hear how it all began....
Rift (Nightshade Prequel, #1)Chronicling the rise of the Keepers, this is the stunning prequel to Andrea Cremer's internationally bestselling Nightshade trilogy!

Sixteen-year-old Ember Morrow is promised to a group called Conatus after one of their healers saves her mother's life. Once she arrives, Ember finds joy in wielding swords, learning magic, and fighting the encroaching darkness loose in the world. She also finds herself falling in love with her mentor, the dashing, brooding, and powerful Barrow Hess. When the knights realize Eira, one of their leaders, is dabbling in dark magic, Ember and Barrow must choose whether to follow Eira into the nether realm or to pledge their lives to destroying her and her kind.

With action, adventure, magic, and tantalizing sensuality, this book is as fast-paced and breathtaking as the Nightshade novels.

The Rise of Nine (Lorien Legacies, #3)The Rise of Nine (Lorien Legacies #3) by

August 21st 2012

Another series I really enjoy and this is the conclusion.

It all began with nine. Nine aliens who left their home planet of Lorien when it fell under attack by the evil Mogadorians—who scattered on Earth and went into hiding. They look like ordinary teenagers, but they have extraordinary skills. The Mogadorians killed Number One, Number Two, and Number Three. They tried to kill Number Four ... and failed.

Number Four (aka John Smith) has now teamed up with Number Nine, while Six has gone off to find the others. With the Mogadorians hot on their trail and time running out, they must find a way to come together, before it's too late. Power in numbers will save them all.

Review: Need by Carrie Jones

Need (Need, #1)
Title: Need
Author: Carrie Jones
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Publishing Date: December 23rd 2008
Pages: 306
Genre: Young Adult Urban Fantasy
Series: Need #1
Source: Paperback

Goodreads Summary:
Zara collects phobias the way other girls collect Facebook friends. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.
Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has readers rapidly turning the pages.

Review:
I really do love me a good fairy book and this is an awesome fairy book. The cover is really what drew me to this book and I am so glad it did. The story is as beautiful, dark, and intriguing as the cover.
The story is about a girl who has always lived a normal life, up until her stepfather passed away. Zara’s stepfather raised her and she was very close to him, when he dies Zara becomes a zombie (metaphorically, this is a fairy book, not a zombie book) Zara’s mom thinks it best to send her off to live her grandmother in Maine. This is when things get a little freaky for Zara. Gold dust in the snow and an eerie feeling of someone watching lands Zara on the larger side of paranoid, a feeling she is not comfortable with. Soon she discovers family secrets, strange new friends, and a deadly obsession.

Zara is fun, quirky, sarcastic, and smart. She doesn’t take long to find her place in her new small little town and doesn’t waste any time finding trouble. I really enjoyed being part of Zara’s unique world. The author did a wonderful job of painting a modern world with beautiful and dark creatures. The relationships that Zara forms with her new friends are strong and I loved watching the bond form between the entire group. It was like living with the Scooby gang of urban fantasies. The romance to me was like all the other young adult fantasy romances, except there was no love triangle, just one guy, a really hot sweetheart with some secrets of his own.

I fell in love with the first book of this series almost instantly.

Review: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports by James Patterson

Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports (Maximum Ride, #3)
Title: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports
Author: James Patterson
Publisher: Little Brown and Company
Publishing Date: May 29th 2007
Pages: 432
Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction
Series: Maximum Ride #3
Source: Paperback

Goodreads Summary:

In MAXIMUM RIDE: SAVING THE WORLD AND OTHER EXTREME SPORTS, the time has arrived for Max and her winged "Flock" to face their ultimate enemy and discover their original purpose: to defeat the takeover of "Re-evolution", a sinister experiment to re-engineer a select population into a scientifically superior master race...and to terminate the rest. Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel have always worked together to defeat the forces working against them--but can they save the world when they are torn apart, living in hiding and captivity, halfway across the globe from one another?

Review:

The adventure continues in the 3rd installment of Maximum Ride. The flock is on the run again and in this book we have Max denying her feelings for Fang, Max discovering who her parents are, the flock splitting up because of a disagreement, Fang continuing his blog, Max fighting in a gladiator style battle, more secrets revealed, more experiments uncovered, and more character bonding.

Max is still sarcastic, over protective, and wanting a normal life. She fights with herself throughout the book because she wants a family, school, a boyfriend but around every corner there seems to be danger. I do find myself really rooting for people that seem to care about Max to end up good and not evil. I think Max deserves a break! We do learn more about Max and about the evil experiments on her flock and others including the Erasers. Just a tad bit more is exposed in this book, enough to keep me reading but not enough to keep me from wanting to pull my hair out. Ok maybe not that extreme, but I am sure you get the point.

It is another book filled with lots of action and a fast paced story, but it seems we are still getting to the main point of the series very very slowly. I am also a little confused on the how cross breeding birds with humans and other experiments are going to save the world from environmental dangers. This book did get a little more involved in the politics of saving the environment, which I am fine with but it didn’t feel like it fit with the experiments that included the flock. I still very much liked the book but this part of it did get on my nerves a bit and that is why I gave it 3 to 3.5 hearts instead of 4 hearts.
